SitAware & Brain ChemistryOx here…I’m on the road right now and am reading a couple of great books that I want to share with you. I initially skimmed and dog-eared both of them, and now I’m going through them with a little more attention.

The first one is “Left of Bang” and it’s a book on situational awareness based on the Marine Corps Combat Hunter Program.

The concept is that if you look at a timeline going from left to right, it looks something like this:

Left—earlier——pre-incident indicators——-incident (bang)——later—right

If your first indication that an attack is going to happen is the attack itself, you are “right of bang” on the timeline.

And the earlier you pick up on pre-incident indicators, the further “left of bang” you are and the more likely it is that you’ll be able to mount a meaningful preventive response and stop or blunt the effects of the incident.

Patrick Van Horne and Jason A. Riley (the authors) do a great job of creating a framework to effectively describe how incidents happen and JUST the simple concept of “left of bang” helps the unconscious mind work more effectively to predict and stop incidents.

In addition, they go into threat profiling, attacks from outside, attacks from within (workplace violence, green on blue, etc.) and working through the normalcy bias. It’s a serious book for anyone who’s serious about situational awareness.

For those of you who’ve been through the SEALed Mindset Real World Safety & Threat Detection DVD course, this is a natural supplement. Get it on Amazon now by clicking >HERE<

If you haven’t been through either, and you’re serious about situational awareness, you really should go through both.

Next is “Meet Your Happy Chemicals” from Loretta Graziano Breuning, PhD and it is a GREAT pop-psychology book on dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin, and serotonin.

I have done a significant amount of work over the last 20 years on manipulating brain/body chemicals through bio-feedback and anchoring/triggering to control pain, blunt the stress response, accelerate the learning process, and increase performance and this is one of the easiest to understand books that I’ve ever read on the topic.

I don’t necessarily agree with the author’s explanation for why our bodies are the way that they are today, but her explanation of how these chemicals affect the learning process, the process of developing neural pathways, and the myelination process are very helpful to understand.

The author goes into why you can achieve mastery at some skills (like not touching a hot stove or avoiding getting rear ended) after only 1 repetition and other skills are generally thought to take upwards of 10,000 repetitions to master.

Once you understand the chemicals at play and how they work in the body, you can use the information to enhance your own life and have a more powerful influence in your interactions with others.

If you’ve gone through the Insight Deadly Accuracy course, you’ll benefit tremendously from reading “Meet Your Happy Chemicals” and will be able to leverage what you learn immediately.

If you’ve read “Meet Your Happy Chemicals,” you really want to click >HERE< to go through the Insight Deadly Accuracy course to learn how to release and suppress the release of these chemicals as well as adrenaline and cortisol in your brain/body at will and on command…even in the heat of an extreme stress situation.

And, again, if you haven’t read or gone through either, I’d strongly suggest getting both. They’ll not only help with shooting, but they’ll help you to have more understanding and control of your emotions on a day-to-day basis.
